If you are planning to get an Android, or you are wondering what all the fuss is about then this is the article for you. There is a tablet called the iPad, which runs on iOS. Other tablets run on Android. They are named Android tablets for this reason. What is the difference between Android and iPhone/iPad? Why is one platform is better than the other? Is a preference for one a personal preferences, or can preference be based on fact? Will this turn into another PC or Mac debate?
One platform is not better than the other. They are just two different methods of doing the same thing. Neither of them offers something wildly different to the other. One of them does not guide missiles and the other does not detect gold mines 100 feet underground. They do the same things, but in different ways and by different means.
This will not turn into a PC or Mac debate because every time a new Android or iPad tablet comes out–it has usurped the best parts of its competitor. It is more a case of, “anything you can do, I can do better”, rather than two devices simply flexing their muscles at each other.
There are many differences between the iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Everyone has their own preference of course, but the Android is better in the following five ways.
- Multitasking and Google Integration
Unlike the iPhone/iPad, the Android devices have a standard multitasking function. This allows the user to have background processes running on an Android, where they cannot on an iPhone/iPad. Google is loaded with tools and features that you may use online. If you have an Android then you are able to use these tools and functions on your tablet device too. Moreover, you can have other applications and functions running in the background too.
- Widgets, the desktop and the Android Marketplace
Android gives its users the freedom to determine their user interface to a very large degree of customization. It is far more customizable on the desktop and internally than the iPhone/iPad is. Not only are you allowed to add shortcuts to apps, but there are also useful widgets for the weather or for Twitter, which you can access from your desktop (main screen).
The Android marketplace does have far fewer apps than the iPhone/iPad marketplace; the Android Marketplace still has much more freedom. Google gives developers more freedom to do and add what they like, while Apple severely limits the freedom of their programmers, so that they cannot/will not affect the saleability of their other apps.
- PC sync, browser and memory
The memory of Android phones is easily expandable and easily synchronized with a PC without using software like iTunes. The iPhone/iPad offers no such freedoms without jumping through the Apple hoops (so to speak). In terms of usability, the two browsers as easy to operate, and have similar functions.
- Different providers and choice of equipment
In the future, the iPhone/iPad will have to allow different providers to sell to users. The Android people have allowed this from the very beginning. With the Android you are not forced to choose a provider, you have the freedom to choose the one you want.
No doubt, the iPhone/iPad is a beautiful piece of artistry. The only trouble is that you have limited choices when it comes to your choice of tablet/handset. With the Android there is far more variety and choice of tablet device.
- Open OS and replaceable battery
The biggest advantage of Android as compared to the iPhone/iPad is that the Android cannot be limited by the software, are the developers are allowed to push their own software designs to its full potential. They are not limited by the restrictions of the Apple Company, of by the restrictions of the software itself.
They are being asked to add bricks to a house, instead of being asked to glue metal to a tank (as is the case with iPhone/iPad). The Android also has a replaceable battery. It is ideal if you are on the road a lot and therefore need a second battery with you. You are not as dependent on your charger when your battery fails.
